INTRODUCTION TO DHL LOGISTIC COMPANY
BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF DHL
DHL is a German logistics company that sends out couriers, delivers packages, and sends out express mail. It is a part of the logistics company Deutsche Post in Germany. Each year, the company group delivers more than 1.6 billion packages. DHL Express is the market leader for parcel services in Europe and Germany's main courier and parcel service.
The company was started by Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom, and Robert Lynn, whose last names are the first letters of DHL. Just a few months after the world was amazed by Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon in 1969, the three partners took another small step that would change the way business is done around the world. The founders started flying papers from San Francisco to Honolulu themselves. This started the customs clearance process for the ship's cargo before the ship even got there, which cut down on waiting time in the harbour by a huge amount. People could save a lot of money. With this idea came a new business: international air express, which is the fast delivery of documents and packages by plane.
The DHL Network kept growing at a very fast rate. From Hawaii, the company grew to the Far East, the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. By 1988, DHL had offices in 170 countries and 16,000 workers. At the start of 2002, Deutsche Post World Net bought most of DHL's shares. By the end of 2002, Deutsche Post World Net owned all of DHL. In 2003, Deutsche Post World Net put all of its logistics and express services under one brand, called DHL.
